If more than one contractor works on a construction site, the client must appoint a safety coordinator. This follows from Government Regulation No. 396/2006 Coll. on minimum safety and health requirements for construction sites. The obligation lies with the client, not the contractor, and that is what is most often overlooked in practice.
We act both as coordinator of documentation and as safety coordinator during construction.
Site health and safety plan. We prepare it before work starts and keep it updated during construction as the stage of completion and the number of companies on site change.
Notification of the start of construction work to the relevant labour inspectorate where the size of the project requires it.
Inspection days on site. We come to the site itself, record the findings and resolve them with the site managers of the individual companies. The client and the contractors both receive the record.
Coordination between contractors. Most site accidents happen at the interface between two companies, when one does not know what the other is doing. That is the coordinator's main job.
Checking workers' documents. We verify that people on site hold valid certificates for what they do, that is work at height, scaffolding, load slinging, platform operation and construction machinery. See our course catalogue.
Shorter instruction intervals apply on construction sites than in ordinary operations. For work at a height above 1.5 metres, from a mobile elevating work platform, from a ladder above 5 metres and for earthworks in an excavation deeper than 1.3 metres, instruction is repeated once every 12 months under Section 3 (1) of Decree No. 147/2013 Coll. Workers' certificates therefore expire faster on site than companies expect.
Coordination is usually ordered together with occupational safety for the contractor itself. On larger projects fire protection is added.
