Electrical Hand Tools Inspection and Testing

Electrical hand tools are an essential part of both households and workplaces, but their safe use requires special attention. It is therefore necessary to follow safety procedures and strictly adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions during operation.

Electrical hand tools operating at higher current and voltage levels are considered special technical equipment and are subject to mandatory regular inspections and testing by operators to ensure safe operation.

Legal Regulations for Inspection and Testing of Electrical Hand Tools

Professional inspections and tests (PIT) of electrical hand tools are carried out in accordance with Regulation of the Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Family of the Slovak Republic No. 398/2013 Coll., Section 13b, and the Slovak technical standard STN 33 1600:1996 – “Inspection and Testing of Electrical Hand Tools During Use.”

These legal and technical regulations define the procedures and inspection intervals for electrical hand tools, ensuring occupational safety and health protection when working with such equipment.

Inspections apply to all electrical hand tools used in industry, production halls, workshops, and similar environments, including grinders, saws, drills, milling machines, polishers, lawn mowers, and others.

Legal Obligations of Employers

Every employer, including building operators or property owners/lessors, is legally required to ensure regular professional inspections and tests (PIT) or inspections and checks of all electrical equipment, including electrical hand tools. This obligation provides basic protection for employees against the risk of electric shock.

Classification of Electrical Hand Tools by Usage

Electrical hand tools are classified into three groups based on frequency of use:

  • Group A – Tools used occasionally (up to 100 operating hours per year).

  • Group B – Tools used frequently but for short periods (100 to 250 operating hours per year).

  • Group C – Tools used frequently and for extended periods (more than 250 operating hours per year).
